My First: Sew Delicious

While I'm away, I've got a few guest posts lined up of people sharing their first quilts - those first quilts where we learn a lot of lessons the hard way! Today we have Ros from Sew Delicious sharing her first pretty little quilt.

Hi everyone, I'm Ros from Sew Delicious and it's great to be here to share my first quilt - which was only made a couple of months ago!

I've been sewing for a while now but I always thought quilting was a bit fiddly and accuracy is not a strong point of mine! But I won a charm pack of Sweetwater's Lucy's Crab Shack fabric and my daughter's name is Lucy so it got me thinking maybe I could give quilting a try and make one for her.

I jumped straight in, maybe too quickly - I didn't use a pattern or even make a plan, and I used the charm pack to make some pinwheels. They sat around in my fabric cupboard for several months and then a surge of motivation hit and I bought some yardage of a few selected Lucy's Crab Shack fabrics.

Over Christmas my husband was on holidays and my parents were in town so I had a bit more time than usual to really get stuck into a project - so I did it, and I finished it!

The quilting was tricky and I just used my regular machine foot which caused a little bit of bunching. I have since bought a walking foot and my quilting has been much better since! I'm not confident to try anything but straight lines yet, so I quilted this down either side of every seam.

Since this project, my quilting skills have improved a lot and I've been practicing on quite a few smaller projects, including this quilted mat:

and this iPad case:

I've just finished my second quilt, which is a gift for a friend's new baby, and I've started some blocks to make a quilt for my eldest daughter. I'm also hoping I might make a lap quilt for me before winter comes around - only a few months to go!

Thanks for having me Alyce!

Congratulations Ros, I've always liked this line!! Here's to many more wonderful quilting projects! A reminder that 100% of all sales from my Tea For Two pattern in February will be donated to my sister and her husband. It is only fitting, given the cover quilt was to be Ariella's.

  1. Great projects! I really love your little case at the end. I am getting ready to quilt my first quilt--also pinwheels. I would really like to try something different, but think I am going to do squiggly lines--since I haven't tried any quilting at all. Thanks for sharing!
